One of the largest of the hostas, Empress Wu forms a gigantic mound of thick dark green leaves topped with pale pinkish violet flowers in midsummer. The leaves have beautiful deep veining that gives them a wonderful corrugated texture and they can grow up to an impressive 45cm long. It is named after the first and only female emperor to rule China and makes real statement in any shady or woodland planting schemes.
